tove lo talking body – Biography & History
The Swedish pop singer Tove Lo has experienced a rapid rise through the music business since releasing the single ‘Habits’. The Sunshine Kitty cover art depicts Tove next to a cartoon cat. She has called it a play on pussy power,” but the title and iconography run a bit deeper than that: It ties in with the lynx. This cartoon cat is an extension of me and part of the new music. She’s super cute, but she does stupid shit like getting in fights and getting fucked up. It’s how I feel the album sounds.” I guess I can see that — a packshot that brings together photography and animation a la Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a good fit for Tove’s hyperreal jams. But even more than that, the cat reminds me that pop stars sometimes have as many lives as felines, and that even when they stumble, the best of them land on their feet.
On her solo debut, Sonic Youth’s co-founder is still pushing boundaries. Gordon’s voice has grown eerier with time, and she deploys it to great effect on everything from Air BnB,” which echoes her former band’s de-tuned noise pop, to the glitch-heavy single Sketch Artist,” which sounds like a belated collaboration with Aphex Twin.
That’s meant that sometimes she’s called provocative for the point of provocation — lines about eating pussy out and flashing her ‘disco tits’ live sure gain a lot attention — but talking to Tove over the phone (and seeing her headline Spotify’s Front Left Live in Melbourne a few days later), it’s clear she’s just an all-in person.
For its 30th anniversary, the Beastie Boys’ landmark 1989 sophomore release gets the 180-gram double vinyl treatment. The densely layered album, built around rapid-fire rhymes piled high with Gen-X pop culture references and hundreds of obscure samples spliced together by producers the Dust Brothers, is a stone-cold classic. Even now, songs like Shake Your Rump” and Hey Ladies” have the capacity to inspire unadulterated joy.
Kylie’s not the only one smitten. Lorde, who Tove looks up to, was the first person who fangirled over her – telling her of ‘Habits (Stay High)’: ‘’What a chorus! You’ve definitely got a Top 40 on your hands!’”. They eventually co-wrote ‘Homemade Dynamite’, a standout moment from Lorde’s 2017 album ‘Melodrama’.
As a teen, she developed a crazy fascination and love” for Nirvana, but it was Kurt Cobain ‘s wife, Hole frontwoman Courtney Love , who had the most profound impact on her. Love was both adored and vilified, merging a punk ethos with radio-friendly pop hooks, her lyrics soaked in caustic wit and brutal honesty. Her frankness when it came to body image, fame and feminism, specifically on Hole’s seminal 1998 record Celebrity Skin (That album was my everything,” Lo says), can all be found in Lo’s own material.
The cover art for Joy Division’s debut album was designed by Peter Saville, who had previously created posters for Manchester’s Factor Club in the late Seventies. The chosen image, which was picked by Bernard Sumner, is based on radio waves from pulsar CP 1919 – from the Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy. The duochrome Peter Saville cover of this first Joy Division album speaks volumes,” Susie Goldring said in a review for BBC Online. Its white on black lines reflect a pulse of power, a surge of bass, and raw angst. If the cover doesn’t draw you in, the music will.
But what ties together Tove’s discography isn’t a specific sound but the approach to pop-stardom. Her biggest hits — ‘disco tits’, ‘Cool Girl’, ‘bitches’ — all carry that no-fucks attitude often attempted but rarely pulled off: songs oscillate between vulnerable and brazen, proving the adage they’re of the same coin.
Swedish pop ingenue Tove Lo has been a creative force in her native country for several years, but with the 2014 release of her debut EP Truth Serum she made considerable waves overseas as well. Catchy single “Stay High” peaked at No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart, and Lo nails the song every time at her electric live shows, capturing the relaxed beauty of the recording with her languid vocals and magnetic stage presence. On her latest tour, Tove Lo will treat fans to her original material along with renditions of hits she’s penned for artists like Lea Michele and Cher Lloyd, making for a truly eclectic night of pop magic.
The lyrics Tove Lo writes are not built with anyone else in mind, and are incredibly personal as a result. I’m always like an open book and my songs are like my journals. I feel like some of them admit to maybe needing a bit of a change in myself, rather than just being like ‘I embrace myself!’” Just like Tove Lo, the One Star model has repeatedly gone against the mould over the years, whilst keeping an inherently anti-conformist approach at its core.
Sad bangers are all the rage and no one makes them better than Tove Lo. Once dubbed the saddest girl in Sweden”, the pop star – whose real name is Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson – became a global name when Habits”, a still-inescapable 2014 hit about getting high all the time to forget an ex, hit No1 in the US Billboard Top 40. Since, she’s put out banger after banger, each one as raw, unfiltered and autobiographical as the next, all with synth and bass-heavy, ridiculously catchy beats.
Just two of Fleetwood Mac’s then-five members appear on the cover of their best-selling and arguably greatest album. Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood’s legs are entwined, which serves as a pretty good metaphor for the entanglement between band members that resulted in so many of the record’s lyrical back-and-forths. And really it’s just a gorgeous, classic image, photographed and conceived by Herbert W Worthington with the band, and designed by Desmond Strobel.
Their hearts may be in the right place, but the Avett Brothers‘ hard swerve toward social commentary on Closer Than Together” is a little hard to swallow. Calling stark attention to the current political climate in songs like Bang Bang” and We Americans,” the band strips away the sun-dappled magic from its music and puts its heavy-handed lyrics and rambling melodies forward.
Never afraid to be completely and utterly frank in her lyrics, the artist’s fearless ability to conjure up evocative and infectious soundscapes has seen her create breakaway chart successes and some of the most exciting pop music in recent years. The bold and uncompromising approach to her music is also seen in her own style. Rather than worry about what people think of her lyrics, appearance, or clothes, she would rather rub it in people’s faces even more,” highlighting her staunchly independent approach as an artist.
The fourth and final Post Malone song in the top 10 is his former #1 Sunflower” with Swae Lee, which charts at #10 this week. He becomes only the sixth artist to score four simultaneous top 10 singles, following 50 Cent, the Beatles, Drake, Lil Wayne, and T-Pain. Drake holds the record with seven concurrent top 10 hits last year upon the release of Scorpion, while the Beatles are the only other act to land five songs in the top 10; in fact, in 1964, at the height of Beatlemania, the Fab Four monopolized the top five spots on the chart. All 17 songs from Hollywood’s Bleeding are on the Hot 100 this week.
So far, it’s paid off. Tove tells me Sunshine Kitty came from a less chaotic place” than her previous albums: writing was more a case of sifting through and reckoning with the past than staying afloat in the present.
I started writing Sunshine Kitty after my massive touring year in 2017 and I was kinda like, ‘holy shit, that was a lot’. After releasing Blue Lips and the short film, I’d kind of completed all the missions I had set out to do and I was just like, ‘oh my god I’m so sick of myself!’. I started writing for others again and it was a nice break from my own head.” One of the many hits Tove Lo has co-written, it should be pointed out, is Lorde’s totally brilliant Homemade Dynamite.
One night this summer, Tove Lo was in a bar in Brooklyn, getting hit on by a guy. That day could come soon: Several magazines have anointed her a “pop star in waiting”, and the singer is hard at work on her debut album.
This song is powerful and therapeutic. Tove Lo sings “I can’t be the perfect one” and “I’m not the prettiest you’ve ever seen.” Nobody’s perfect. A cliched but ever so relatable and comforting statement.
One song in the middle of Tove Lo’s fourth album sticks out like an F1 car at a karting track: Jacques, made with producer Jax Jones, is sledgehammer chart fare that sits incongruously alongside the otherwise narcotised, tropical mood of Sunshine Kitty. It screams of label desperation for a hit and disturbs an album that largely seems set at 3am on a night out, as the Swedish pop star voices her brazen come-ons, pleas and darkest thoughts in a cigarette-addled rasp.
Some of my favorite lyrics from this album come from the songs Come Undone” and Shifted.” Lo’s lengthy, in-depth verses make it so that her songs don’t become quickly annoying and too repetitive like many pop songs can be. However, she still has tons of bops and catchy hooks as well.
Dylan walks arm-in-arm with then-girlfriend and muse Suze Rotolo through the West Village in freezing New York, February 1963. Rotolo described the circumstances to the New York Times in 2008: He wore a very thin jacket, because image was all. Our apartment was always cold, so I had a sweater on, plus I borrowed one of his big, bulky sweaters. On top of that I put on a coat. So I felt like an Italian sausage. Every time I look at that picture, I think I look fat.” Yet her memoir, A Freewheelin’ Time, also noted the cover’s significance, how it influenced the look of album covers precisely because of its casual down-home spontaneity and sensibility”.
