West Side StoryWelcome to the official West Side Story website! Trujillo and Delgado became, in effect, translators, experimenting with the Sharks to propose movements — flourishes of the arms, the introduction of salsa and merengue steps and turns, shaking, active hips, a funky little chug to cross the floor. De Keersmaeker, in response, would take up the movements and make adjustments to bring them back into her vocabulary (the shoulders would be lowered slightly, a hip shake made tighter). It was the back-and-forth that she had envisioned. The two gangs’ movements became more distinct, with the Jets dancing on their backs and stomachs, manipulating their limbs like break dancers, then rising to attack. The Sharks were more upright, their arms more rounded, their bodies moving like water.

He loved to dance, and he loved to tell stories. The result was choreography that explored more than how the body moves: his choreography was original, emotional, startling. His New York Times obituary praised his “genius for capturing the essence of an age”.

His recording of On The Town, made long after its premiere with, among others, three of the original cast members, is the first show album ever to be put onto disc by its composer. But one historical first has yet to occur in the annals of recorded Broadway musicals: a full original cast album conducted by its composer.

There is a lot that West Side Story does not get right. Consider this: One of the best things about West Side Story is the presence of Rita Moreno, who plays the tough but caring girlfriend of Bernardo, the leader of the Puerto Rican gang the Sharks. Moreno was a Puerto Rican woman who was playing a Puerto Rican woman, something that didn’t happen often in early-’60s Hollywood. And yet Rita Moreno had to wear brownface. All the white actors who played Puerto Ricans in West Side Story wore dark brown makeup, so Moreno had to wear dark brown makeup, too, so that she could match their skin tone. It was like mud,” Moreno remembered , decades later. And when she tried to complain to the makeup artist, the makeup artist asked if she was racist.

Chita Rivera, who played Anita on Broadway, and dancer Tony Mordente, who was a Jet, actually got married and had a child! (And that was in spite of Robbins’ ban on Shark-Jet socialising). The musical is also being re-envisioned for the screen, with a film adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg slated to be released on Dec. 18, 2020 — with a handful of actors appearing in both.

Alongside Zegler’s casting announcement came news of who would be portraying Anita, Bernardo, and Chino Ariana DeBose (Hamilton, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical) is taking on the role of Anita, one originated by Chita Rivera onstage and immortalized by Moreno onscreen. The stage star gave fans a first glimpse of her as the fiery character on Twitter.

Robbins originally planned to write a story about a star-crossed romance between a Jewish girl and Catholic boy on New York’s Upper East Side. Bernstein and Laurents changed his mind when Puerto Rican and American gang violence began to figure in the news.

In Pennsylvania, Sondheim became friends with the son of Broadway lyricist and producer Oscar Hammerstein II, who gave the young Sondheim advice and tutelage in musical theater, and served as a surrogate father during a time of tumult. In his teens, Sondheim had penned a satire about his school, the musical By George!, which he thought his mentor would love and thus asked for feedback. Hammerstein in fact thought the project needed tons of work and offered honest criticism, which Sondheim would later see as invaluable. Sondheim also worked as an assistant on 1947’s Allegro, one of Hammerstein’s theater collaborations with composer Richard Rodgers, with the experience having long-lasting implications on the young composer’s approach to his work.

West Side Story is not only a classic musical, it is also one of only a handful of landmark shows that fundamentally changed the form of musicals. Arguably, its greatest influence was in the theatricality of its presentation—the seamlessness and cinematic flow of its staging—and the integration of script, song, dance, and set. In its original Broadway run, West Side Story ran for 732 performances—a success, but not a smash hit. Not until the overwhelming success of the film in 1961 (and its ongoing popularity) were the show and its score fully appreciated and embraced by audiences.

On September 26, 1957, West Side Story, composed by Leonard Bernstein, opens at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. For the groundbreaking musical, Bernstein provided a propulsive and rhapsodic score that many celebrate as his greatest achievement as a composer. However, even without the triumph of West Side Story, Bernstein’s place in musical history was firmly established. In addition to his work as a composer, the Renaissance man of music” excelled as a conductor, a concert pianist, and a teacher who brought classical music to the masses.

Choreographer and director Jerome Robbins, composer Leonard Bernstein, writer Arthur Laurents and lyricist Stephen Sondheim. Steven Spielberg has cast 18-year-old singer-songwriter Rachel Zegler as Maria. The newcomer will make her film debut opposite Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver), who will play Tony.

Written by the dream creative team of Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story’‘s legendary jazz, Latin and classical-inspired score features the treasured songs “Something’‘s Coming,” “Tonight,” “I Feel Pretty, “Somewhere”,” and “America.” West Side Story and its subsequent revivals have won multiple Tony Awards® since first opening on Broadway in 1957. Just four years later it was adapted into a film which swept the Oscars and today still ranks among AFI’s Top 100 Films.

These first three minutes announce that if you have any expectations for West Side Story,” they should immediately be discarded. In the original 1957 production, the choreographer Jerome Robbins, who first conceptualized the musical, created a revolutionary prologue. The Jets and the Sharks — the two New York gangs who try to destroy each other — were introduced exclusively through movement. They started with unified finger snaps and then burst into dance: They ran, leapt, kicked, charged, evaded and overtook one another, evoking not only masculine aggression but also the architecture of New York City, its alleys, underpasses, scaffolding, empty lots. They covered the stage with dance like human graffiti.

Rival gangs the Sharks (made up of Puerto Rican immigrants) and the Jets (whose members are white) take the place of the Capulets and Montagues. Tony, a founder of the Jets, plays the Romeo role, falling in love with Maria, sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks.

Working together was not always easy. During the rehearsal period, Bernstein would sometimes retreat across the street to a bar to avoid Robbins after a particularly unpleasant argument (though there are also stories of the two of them together, Robbins with his hand on Bernstein’s shoulder as he sat at the piano, revising music measure by measure, as if they shared one intelligence). Robbins was a fierce editor of the material until the very end, scrapping and reworking songs (Something’s Coming” was written just a few weeks before the play debuted) and driving the actors to tears. The four collaborators gradually arrived at a shared vision, discovering what Sondheim later called a wholeness” — a synthesis of dramatic language, music and dance.

In 1962, Dave Brubeck recorded jazz versions of selections from the film score on Music From West Side Story. Book by Arthur Laurents. Based on a Conception by Jerome Robbins. Music by Leonard Bernstein. Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Young lovers are caught between prejudice and warring street gangs in one of the most important and powerful musicals of all time.

Robbins wouldn’t let the original Jets and Sharks casts mix, to help create real tension on set. They rehearsed in different rooms and weren’t allowed to eat lunch together. Lyricist Stephen Sondheim wanted West Side Story” to be the first Broadway musical to use the F-word (in the song Gee, Officer Krupke”), but it was changed after the song was played for producers.

Sondheim’s work has also been the subject of several revues, including Side by Side by Sondheim in 1976, Putting It Together in 1992 and Sondheim on Sondheim in 2010. Broadway has continued to host Sondheim classics as well, including the 2009 revivals of West Side Story and A Little Night Music, with the latter starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury. In 2011, Follies was revived, starring Bernadette Peters.

Tony, this is important!” Riff says. Tony responds, Very important. Acemen, rocketmen.” Powell was sarcastically referencing the argot of the Jets. Rita Moreno (Anita) and George Chakiris (Bernardo) won Oscars® for their performances, among the 10 bestowed on the film—the most ever for a movie musical at that time.

In 1957 West Side Story premiered in Washington. The show was a hit. Its subsequent premiere on Broadway left audiences and critics reeling. Whether they liked it or not, it was clear this musical was something special. It ran for 732 performances and then toured nationally. A production ran in the West End for more than 1000 performances.

The score will be conducted by Gustavo Dudamel , the music director of the L.A. Philharmonic. The Venezuelan-born conductor earned the Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award for the Elevation of Music in Society from the Longy School of Music.
