WILLIE NELSONSince the mid-1970s Willie Hugh Nelson has emerged as one of the most versatile, enduring, and influential talents in late twentieth-century country music. Midway through 2017, noted pot smoker Woody Harrelson announced that he’d actually given up using marijuana after, “30 solid years of just partying too fucking hard.” But when you’re a celebrity with a penchant for a good time, a fat joint, and a friendship with Willie Nelson, that only lasts so long. In the September cover story for Esquire , Harrelson explains how his hiatus from cannabis was derailed by none other than Nelson himself.

Willie was almost out of time. In a few minutes he’d have to head out onstage, where he’d summon all the ghosts, play all the hits. The audience would be older than it had been once, but you could tell the fans did not feel that age when Willie ran through Whiskey River” and If You’ve Got the Money I’ve Got the Time.” It’s the sort of music that makes you wish you were back at the beginning, when the road seemed like it would go on forever.

These experiences were undoubtedly invaluable, but none of what has come before will prepare listeners for the cosmic country soul of Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, the band’s new, self-titled album, a mesmerizing, emotionally genuine, endlessly rewarding work set for release on Fantasy Records. From the epic Set Me Down on a Cloud” to the climactic If I Started Over,” the album delivers one sublime song and inspired performance after another.

Aside from Nelson’s drawled singing voice and the soothing hum of his old beat-up Martin N-20 classical guitar (nicknamed Trigger), Raphael’s harp blowing is the next most distinguishing feature of that Willie sound,” which Nelson and the Family developed together in the early 1970s after he left the confines of Nashville to return to Texas and literally let his hair down.

Raphael, 67, even accompanied Nelson on the Highwaymen tour with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson in 1990. That iconic trek was the last time he played at Target Center, where Willie & Family will perform Friday with Alison Krauss & Union Station.

Nelson is set to headline his Farm Aid festival in Wisconsin on September 21. The music festival raises money to help farmers fight to stay on their land. The 86-year-old will resume touring in September and perform at the festival, according to Rolling Stone.

Following the breakthrough success of The Red Headed Stranger, as well as Waylon Jennings ‘ simultaneous success, outlaw country – so named because it worked outside of the confines of the Nashville industry – became a sensation, and RCA compiled the various-artists album Wanted: The Outlaws!, using material Nelson, Jennings , Tompall Glaser, and Jessi Colter had previously recorded for the label. The compilation boasted a number one single in the form of the newly recorded Jennings and Nelson duet “Good Hearted Woman,” which was also named the Country Music Association’s single of the year. For the next five years, Nelson consistently charted on both the country and pop charts, with “Remember Me,” “If You’ve Got the Money I’ve Got the Time,” and “Uncloudy Day” becoming Top Ten country singles in 1976; “I Love You a Thousand Ways” and the Mary Kay Place duet “Something to Brag About” were Top Ten country singles the following year.

Nelson really lit up trading blues licks on his battered acoustic guitar Trigger with his electric-guitar-strumming son Lukas. And 12 hours of music came to a spirited end with several stars of the day — Neil Young, Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Margo Price (and her baby) — singing I’ll Fly Away” together, and Nelson giving his cowboy hat a heck of a toss into the crowd.

The next day, Nelson teaches the song to his band in his Pedernales recording studio, an unmarked building on his golf course. The space has a lot of history. One day in 1982, Nelson woke up Merle Haggard, who’d passed out after being up for five days, and brought him here to record his famous last verse to their duet Pancho and Lefty.” Nelson gave the band members just a few days notice for today’s session. They had no idea he was going to cut nearly an entire gospel album in one sitting.

So glad he’s doing great! Who doesn’t love Willie? Would pay 20x as much to see Willie than I would to see Carrie. With Willie it’s always been about the music and always timeless music. With her, it’s more about hair and wardrobe.

In 2007, Nelson started marketing his own brand of green fuel, BioWillie, a combination of diesel and biodiesel made from soybeans. “It seems like that’s good for the whole world if we can start growing our own fuel instead of starting wars over it,” said Nelson in a 2005 interview.

To be fair, Tucker has been relatively dormant musically; she released her first album of original songs in 17 years, While I’m Livin’,” last month. Co-produced by Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings, While I’m Livin’” is excellent old-school country, and singles Hard Luck” and The Wheels of Laredo” translated terrifically live, with the 61-year-old, pink-haired Tucker strutting in knee-high cowboy boots and showcasing the gripping, gritty twang in her voice.

One of Nelson’s many creative high-water marks and his first real commercial breakthrough came with Red Headed Stranger. This 1975 concept album was recorded in a small Texas studio on a shoestring budget. Some of the executives at Columbia Records, Nelson’s label at this time, balked at releasing it. (Its raw minimalism, to them, suggested a mere demo record.) Yet it ultimately became the first of many million sellers Nelson would enjoy during the 1970s. From it also came Nelson’s first #1 single, Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,” ironically not a song written by Nelson but an ethereal version of a 1945 Fred Rose composition.

Nelson had not given up singing in clubs and by 1956, he had decided to record some music. Without the help of a record label, he recorded his first song, “No Place for Me” and sold it. After briefly relocating to Vancouver, Washington, he recorded a cover of the Leon Payne piece, “Lumberjack” and received some positive local attention. He was writing other music at the same time and sold “Family Bible” for mere pocket change only to have it be made a hit by Claude Gray in 1960.

In September 2016, came For the Good Times: A Tribute to Ray Price, an album of newly recorded interpretations of 12 Ray Price songs. In 2017, he released two albums of newly recorded performances: God’s Problem Child, with 13 new songs that debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Country album chart and #10 on the Billboard 200, and Willie Nelson and The Boys (Willie’s Stash, Vol. 2), that includes 11 country classics and one brand-new song performed by Nelson and his sons Lukas and Micah.

That finally arrived via the folks at Columbia Records who had to grit their teeth as Nelson and his longtime band settled into a studio in Garland, Texas, to spend five days recording a country concept album, built around the title track, a tune originally written for Perry Como that found commercial strength in a version recorded by Arthur Smith and his Cracker-Jacks in the early ‘50s.

Willie loved listening to a variety of music as a child. He had a great love of Frank Sinatra, but he also listened to Big Band and Texas country music. Willie gave his first public music performance at the age of ten when he played for a dance. He continued to play at dances and local entertainment establishments throughout high school, sometimes joining the fiddle player, Bud Fletcher, whom Bobbie Lee Nelson would eventually marry. During school, Willie also kept jobs as a door-to-door salesman and a disc jockey at a local radio station.
