Japanese artist and musician Yoko Ono has often been cited as a divisive figure in the history of The Beatles. After a brief institutionalization for depression, Ono was married again to American jazz musician and film producer Anthony Cox. The marriage was ultimately annulled in 1963 because she had neglected to finalize her divorce from Ichiyanagi. After finalizing that divorce, Cox and Ono married again on June 6, 1963 but would wind up divorcing in 1969.
A rebellious spirit enamored with the radical strains of 20th-century music, Ono struggled to translate the complexity of imagined sound into the limited structure of musical notation. Speaking with curator Hans Ulrich Obrist in 2001, she reflected: When I was living in…Westchester, New York, I was woken up in the morning by a grand chorus of the birds outside my window. I found myself, automatically, making an attempt to translate the sounds of the symphony of birds into musical notes. Then I realized that since the singing of many, many birds was so complex, I could not possibly translate it into musical notations. I didn’t have the ability to, is how I first thought sic. But I immediately realized that it was not a question of my ability, but what was wrong with the way we scored music.” All of Ono’s projects share this underlying frustration: that the material world cannot replicate the purity of ideas.
Ono first met John Lennon of the Beatles on November 9, 1966, when he visited a preview of her exhibition at the Indica Gallery in London, England. Lennon was taken with the positive, interactive nature of her work. He specifically cited a ladder leading up to a black canvas with a spyglass on a chain, which revealed the word “yes” written on the ceiling. The two began an affair approximately 18 months later. Lennon divorced his first wife, Cynthia (with whom he had a son, Julian, born in 1963), and married Ono on March 20, 1969.
In February 2016, Ono made headlines after she was admitted to a New York hospital. She sought treatment after experiencing flu-like symptoms. Her illness delayed her from traveling to France for a career retrospective showing of her art at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon. That same year, Ono participated in a group exhibition at the Istabul Modern with the installation work entitled “Ex It,” which features trees growing out of coffins. She also promoted the unveiling of a peace collection called Skylanding in Chicago.
After meeting John Lennon when he was one of perhaps the four most famous people in the world, she has kept his name in our hearts as much as her own, in the decades since his passing. In 2016, on the eve of her birthday, she won the Inspiration award at the NME Awards in London, presented to her by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore.
Yoko Ono was born in Tokyo in 1933. A survivor of the trauma inflicted on Japan during World War II, she moved to the United States in 1953 during a period of surging nationalism, consumerism, and anti-Japanese sentiment. During this time, Ono became a central figure within New York’s downtown scene and became close collaborators with artist George Maciunas, the founder of Fluxus. Many avant-garde intellectuals, artists, composers, and writers gathered regularly at Ono’s Chambers Street loft for experimental performances by groundbreaking artists like La Monte Young, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Terry Jennings, Jackson Mac Low, Richard Maxfield, Henry Flynt, Joseph Byrd, Simone Forti, and Robert Morris. Here, Ono realized some of her earliest conceptual works that would greatly influence the trajectory of art, film, and music.
Multimedia artist and performer Yoko Ono was born into an aristocratic family on February 18, 1933, in Tokyo, Japan, the eldest of Isoko and Eisuke Ono’s three children. Eisuke, who worked for the Yokohama Specie Bank, was transferred to San Francisco, California, two weeks before she was born. The rest of the family soon followed. Her father was transferred back to Japan in 1937, and Ono subsequently enrolled at the elite Peers School (formerly known as the Gakushuin School) in family moved to New York in 1940 and then back to Japan in 1941, when her father was transferred to Hanoi on the eve of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Ono remained in Tokyo through World War II, enduring the great firebombing of 1945. At the age of 18, Ono moved with her parents to Scarsdale, New York. She studied at Sarah Lawrence College, but left to elope with her first husband, Toshi Ichiyanagi.
John and Yoko had set up home in the Dakota building, one of Manhattan’s most fashionable addresses at 1 West 72nd Street, in February 1973 – just a few weeks after the incident at the party. Most of us, as women, hope that we can achieve our freedom within the existing social set-up, thinking that, somewhere, there must be a happy medium for men and women to share freedom and responsibility. But if we just took the time to observe the very function of our society, the greed-power-frustration syndrome, we would soon see that there is no happy medium to be achieved. We can, of course, aim to play the same game that men have played for centuries, and inch by inch, take over all the best jobs and eventually conquer the whole world, leaving an extremely bitter male stud-cum-slave class moaning and groaning underneath us. This is alright for an afternoon dream, but in reality, it would obviously be a drag.
In his September 1980 Newsweek interview the interviewer said to John aren’t you the guy who said in 1963 that women should be obscene and not heard,and John said yes and I’m thankful to Yoko for the feminist education.
Destination NSW is the government organisation charged with promoting tourism and events. To start dictating who the MCA should or should not be exhibiting is to cross a line that separates funding bodies from museum professionals. The implication is that only those artists who are guaranteed crowd-pullers should be given shows—a policy that would severely limit the field from which curators make their choices. The implicit threat is that Destination NSW will withhold funds if its advice is ignored.
There was much sniggering in the press, and Yoko’s avant-garde cronies accused her of selling out, even though her approach anticipated that of landmark items like Michael Snow’s Wavelength (1967) and Hollis Frampton’s Zorns Lemma (1970). But what she describes on the soundtrack as the most meaningful meaningless film” had stealthily radical aesthetic and political purposes that prompted Yoko to dub the 80-minute offering an aimless petition signed by people with their anuses”.
The couple collaborated on art, film and musical projects, and became famous for their series of “conceptual events” to promote world peace, including the “bed-in” held in an Amsterdam hotel room during their honeymoon in 1969. After her marriage to Lennon, Ono struggled with her ex-husband over custody of Kyoko. She recorded the song “Don’t Worry Kyoko” as an effort to reach out to her child. In 1971, her ex-husband disappeared with Kyoko, and Ono did not learn for years what had happened to her daughter. Apparently, Kyoko spent more than a decade living with a religious cult called the Walk with her father.
Ono’s artwork was the focus of an exhibit at London’s prestigious Indica Gallery in 1966, and John Lennon wandered in. He said later he was hoping there might be quality drugs or an orgy later in the evening, but he was impressed with an Ono work that required him to climb a ladder to read the word “Yes” printed in tiny letters on the gallery ceiling. Though both Ono and Lennon were already married, they soon fell in love. In 1968 they released a collaborative collection of cacophonous screeches, Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins, which featured both of them naked on the album cover. When their respective divorces were finalized, they married in 1969.
In 1945, her mother took the family to the countryside to escape Tokyo, in time to survive the massive Allied bombing of the city; however, rich city dwellers were unwelcome, and the Ono children were often forced to beg for food.
ONO: Right away? I don’t know. Not being appreciated for 40 years or something … It feels like I was accused of something that I didn’t do, which was breaking up the Beatles. That was like being somebody who is in prison without having done anything wrong. It’s like you’re accused of murder and you’re in prison and you can’t get out. That’s why I finally came to the conclusion to use that big energy of hatred that was coming to me and turn it around into love.
Simultaneously, she released several collaborative albums with Lennon, starting with their Unfinished Music series spawning Two Virgins (1968) and Life with the Lions (1969). Double Fantasy , released three weeks prior to Lennon’s murder in 1980, went on to gain widespread commercial success worldwide, topping the charts in the United Kingdom and the United States, among others. Apart from winning the 1981 Album of the Year award at the 24th Annual Grammy Awards , it was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Another album with Lennon, Milk and Honey , would be posthumously made available in 1984.
Before that, she defied her parents when they emigrated from Tokyo to the affluent town of Scarsdale, New York, where Ono would go to college and fall in with the art crowd that her parents disapproved of. She’d follow that lifestyle all the way to Downtown Manhattan, and into a lifetime of non-conformity that, in 2018, brings us ‘Warzone’ – Ono’s fourteenth solo album: not an easy listen for Sunday driving, but arguable the less muddled Yoko Ono has ever sounded. At 85 years old, it feels like a vital chapter for her – one she was compelled to write.
By inviting Ono and Lennon to his museum, Harithas established the Everson as an enthusiastic outpost for conceptual art. For a few years, it maintained a certain visibility and reputation for its embrace of cutting-edge art forms before falling back into a more traditional programming groove. Harithas left, and, later, the Everson wrestled with serious financial and staffing challenges.
Rather, this was mainly a pop concert, highlighting pop singers, along with a backup chorus, band and dancers. All — but for a violinist, a handful of dancers and most of the stagehands, were women. Although the festival has been a partnership with the Getty Research Institute, it this time also had the contribution of Girlschool L.A., a community of women-identified artists founded by Airborne Toxic Event violinist Anna Bulbrook, who was the producer and mastermind of the concert.
Among her short film concoctions, Ono made No. 4 (also known as Bottoms), a short film of 365 volunteers’ naked buttocks; Up Your Legs Forever with the camera ogling people’s unclothed legs; Fly following a fly as it crawled over a naked woman’s body; and Freedom, wherein a woman attempted to remove her bra without success.
