Lil BabyHailing from Atlanta, Georgia, rapper Lil Baby is at the forefront of a new wave of hip-hop artists coming out of the city. Those artists come from the places I come from,” he said of the ban. In instances like this, you have to separate the art from the incident. Clearly these artists come from different pasts—they talk about it in their music. But the point of the music is to transition out of that.” Many of the artists like Cassanova and Don Q spoke out against the NYPD’s influence in the festival.

But after the news broke on Wednesday afternoon, some tweeps got a li’l confused. They thought it was American rapper Da Baby who was coming. The rapper was born in Atlanta and gained national attention with his Top 10 hit “Yes Indeed,” featuring rapper Drake in 2018.

Rapper Lil Baby grew up in Atlanta hanging with friends like Young Thug, Coach K, and Pee. In 2015, at age 19, Lil Baby went to prison for two years for a probation violation. Upon his release in 2017, he jump-started his rap career with a mixtape called Perfect Timing, released in April of that year.

In May 2018, Lil Baby released his debut studio album ‘Harder Than Ever’, debuting at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200 chart. The album was supported by the wildly popular singles, Southside” and Yes Indeed” featuring Drake – the latter peaking at No. 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100. His latest release ‘Drip Harder’, an inflammatory collaboration with Gunna, hit the Top 10 US streaming chart in its first week and featured the outstanding lead single ‘Drip Too Hard’, a viral smash that became one of the five most-streamed songs in the US the week of its release, and the most-added song at rap radio the following week. With momentum like that, it’s clear that Lil Baby is poised for world domination.

Production credits on the audio project are lined with names like Southside, Tay Keith, Wheezy, Quay Global, Turbo, Earl The Pearll and more. The song was released on May 18, 2018.

Rap, like the music industry as a whole, is increasingly focused on all kinds of dumb shit that gets attention in this celebrity-obsessed, attention-addled moment. But it’s not supposed to be about the clout, the tweets, or the viral gossip. It comes from something more grounded than that, and Lil Baby is a part of that tradition.

No other rapper would bring you to the block like this, just walking around, no security,” Lil Baby said, almost offhandedly, as we shot some photos. Ced and G-Five nodded. It was hard to imagine, in that moment, anyone having it out for Lil Baby. As we’d arrived, he’d yelled up to the corner, where a middle-aged guy in a skullcap greeted him and came down to chat. They traded a few updates, and as we turned away, Lil Baby explained that the man was the true hustler on the block.

The top 10 best songs by hip hop artist Lil Baby include singles featuring the Drake hit Yes Indeed” which peaked at number six, Drip Too Hard” and Freestyle”.

In addition to an original score composed by Blood Orange, Queen & Slim will feature a 17-song soundtrack with new tracks by Ms. Lauryn Hill, Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Baby, Vince Staples featuring 6lack X Mereba, Tiana Major 9 & EARTHGANG, and Coast Contra featuring BJ The Chicago Kid and Syd, plus already released songs from the likes of Roy Ayers, Bilal, and Mike Jones.

Established and up-and-coming musicians, vocalists, rappers and bands spanning a diverse spectrum of genres and styles. Since the announcement, hip-hop heads have been super-excited about Lil Baby’s young visit to SA.

Even prior to ever stepping in the booth, Baby’s environment, and network of friends and collaborators began to unknowingly groom the young star into the phenom that he is today. For the rapper, his melodic street poetry was the unofficial passing of the torch from an era particularly catalyzed by the talents of names like Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan.

Going from a trap star to a rap star has changed Lil Baby’s life and no one saw it coming—including him—but yet he still believes it’s his destiny. Lil Baby has been arrested in Atlanta.

Last month, Lil Baby gave credit to Gunna, telling his fans that he used to pay Gunna to write his raps for him to practice. Now, the “How Much” artist is speaking out again to say that he never released Gunna-based material.

Today, we get to hear Collide,” a song from R&B singer and new Motown signee Tiana Major 9 and the rising Outkast-influenced Atlanta rap duo EARTHGANG. The duet was produced by Benny Cassette and comes with a music video that was recently shot in London. Watch, listen, and check out the full trailer for Queen & Slim below.

None of this is new. And that there’s nothing new about Lil Baby’s music is not an indictment of him. Rather, it’s an indictment of society. How many times must these stories be told? How many times must they be ignored? An artist’s only obligation is to be honest to themselves and their craft. They’re not obligated to know the entire history of culture and then create something new. They’re obligated to create beauty or truth, as they see fit.

The cosign of an artist of Young Thug’s caliber is enough to catalyze some talents. But, when taking Thug’s full-blown friendship and mentorship into account, the results could be insane. Such is the case for Lil Baby. This isn’t to say that Young Thug’s responsible for Baby’s success, but the newcomer has been influenced by Thugga, as the So Much Fun rapper helped him get his foot in the door—a piece of succor that anyone can appreciate.

Lil Baby he’s not no internet rapper,” Pee said. He didn’t catch no song that just jumped on Soundcloud. He actually out here and was in these streets building it step by step.” Lil Baby confirmed this. I don’t really know the logistics of a Soundcloud rapper,” he told me.

The prolific Atlanta star has only been rapping a year and has already made his name as one of the city’s best storytellers. Drake’s a fan—it’s only a matter of time before everyone else is too.

Being a role model is important to Lil Baby. After having had a tough upbringing and then getting into some trouble in his late teens and early twenties, he uses music to express himself, and as a platform to speak to a younger generation.

Lil Baby released his debut album ‘Harder Than Ever’ on 18th May 2018, with the project peaking at No. 3 in the Billboard Charts. However Baby has also released five mixtapes ‘Perfect Timing’, ‘Harder Than Hard’, ‘2 The Hard Way’, ‘Too Hard’ and ‘Drip Harder’.

Love it or hate it, the power of the Drake co-sign is undeniable with his affinity for lending it to southern upstarts being well-documented. So, when Lil Baby and the 6 God linked up for “Yes Indeed,” the Atlanta star’s takeover was only a matter of time. Interestingly enough, the track, which credits Drake as a featured artist, was originally his own to begin with. It was when Lil Baby hopped on the track that Drizzy ended up giving it to the rising star The cut first premiered on Drizzy’s OVO Radio and generated quite the buzz before an official release. It set the stage for 2018’s Harder Than Ever and issued a new era of mainstream success for Lil Baby, as he and his team effectively leveraged the new platform into longevity.

The fact that I’m writing about a music video called Baby ” by Lil Baby and DaBaby six months later is now difficult. My critical adoration for the two rappers hasn’t decreased, but my ability to make jokes about rap babies has plummeted. There are only so many funny infant-adjacent headlines one man can engineer in a calendar year. Regardless, the duo’s video, which doubles as a Scarface homage, is predictably entertaining and painfully obvious — a hallmark of DaBaby’s work. Is a rapper truly a rapper if their favorite movie isn’t the 1983 Al Pacino-starring, gangster vehicle? The Daps-directed visual features both Baby and DaBaby recreating the classic chainsaw, bathroom scene, albeit with more jewelry. It’s worth four minutes of your time, if you’re willing to not think about it too hard.

There are things he doesn’t speak on, even when he does. And certain themes get circled to back and again: There’s the expectant stuff like loyalty and grinding, his grounded observations of legacy and opportunity and the fragility of this winning moment. But the most surprising thing may be his constant return to a hand of fate, of God, being behind his good fortunes. He says he went to church every Sunday until the music industry took him out of it. He was into church—not the Bible, he says, though his mother reveals he would inexplicably quote scripture as a young boy. The idea that he’s a God-fearing, church-going human, despite his musical subject matter and life choices, isn’t new. Like so much about him, there’s nothing new when you try to break it down by pieces, which is the problem. People are not pieces; they’re wholes. And why the whole holiness that is Dominique Armani Jones is street rap’s ascendant chosen one at this time? Well, he may have the best answer available.

In 2017, he witnessed Baby drop four projects in 11 months, before releasing three more in seven months the following year. Rashad’s watched his artist amass billions of streams, going from small clubs on promotional tours to only being able to book amphitheaters and better. He’s looking forward to the release of Lil Baby’s next project because it’s the first one that’s been incubated and will be treated with a full rollout. Baby’s only had one physical release—2018’s Harder Than Ever—everything else has been digital only, but the impact has been real. Gold, platinum and multi-platinum certifications, top 10 hits, the kinds of songs that even if you’re not into mumble trap, you’ve come across, or rather have had them come across you. People who don’t know what Lil Baby is but listen to the radio or go to clubs will know Yes Indeed” and Drip Too Hard” when they hear it.

The diverse crowd isn’t a surprise to the Brooklyn artist. JHN’s musical ancestry has allowed his vines to branch out to artists like Usher, dvsn and Beyonce; all artists he’s earned co-writer credits for respectively. But then there are those who discovered him through Fortnite or his work on Brown Skin Girl.” No matter how Ghetto Lenny crossed fans’ path, he’s grateful listeners are making the pit stop.

It could be argued that after decades of songs about murder, gang violence and rivalries, what rap needs is vulnerability, and the baby trend is a positive step towards this. But then you listen to DaBaby’s Baby Sitter , where he claims: I’m the type of Baby that’s gon’ fuck the babysitter”. Mate: grow up.

All of Lil Baby’s exploits might make him look like a perfect rapper, but they wouldn’t mean nearly as much if Lil Baby weren’t also making incredible rap music. And yet, in just a year, Lil Baby has managed to end up with not only the career of someone far more experienced but also the technical ability. His music works within the expanded dimensions of vocal manipulation and melody Future and Young Thug injected into Atlanta trap over the last half decade, but his own style tends toward a nimble-tongued sing-song that naturally matches the quick patter of his conversation.

Dominique Jones, known professionally as Lil Baby, is an American rapper from Atlanta, Georgia. He is best known for his songs “Freestyle”, “Yes Indeed” and “My Dawg”, the latter two peaking at number 6 and 71 respectively on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
